SCUTTLEBUTT BREWING

Every year, students of the graphic design program design a can for Scuttlebutt Brewing in return for them sponsoring our Portshowlio. We all submit designs for a limited edition brew that'll be printed on the cans.

This is 2024's winning design!

PROJECT SUMMARY

Scuttlebutt Brewing Co. is releasing a limited edition milk stout brew and wanted a design that would evoke the off kilter type of brew, but also cater to their niche demographic. I went for a simple, yet effective, design that seamlessly wraps around the can (the spots connect on the back), a central typographic element that feels like a fat cow, and the logo framed by a cow bell.

BEHIND THE SCENES

Here are some select process captures to see how I achieved the final result.

SKETCH VERSION #1

I made two versions at once and started in Illustrator using a dieline for a 16oz can as the basis. My first idea was to make the background a deep brown to echo the color of a stout and then white cow spots to that also double as milk. I wanted the custom typography to go along with that.

SKETCH VERSION #2

This was the second idea I had and made this along with the above sketch in Illustrator. This was the one that people liked more, so this is the one I developed further into a final label (see below).

FINAL PACKAGING

After feedback, I enlarged the "cow head" typography and put the Scuttlebutt logo in a cow bell. I also liked how the cow bell belt kind of looks like a smile. I had already designed the spots to wrap seamlessly around the can, but I wanted to make sure the barcode and any other text (besides the government warning) fit within the spots, as well.
